Theological study and blindness – SpokaneFVS – spokanefavs.com

Friday, December 4th, 2020

By Janine Warrington

Alright, Im heading to class, but Im going to clean my glasses first because being able to see is sort of necessary, I said to my roommates as I got ready to go to my online Hebrew class. Hearing the words come out of my own mouth stopped me in my tracks. Is being able to see really necessary for reading Hebrew? I wondered. What resources are there for the blind to study theology?

As it turns out, Eric J. Harvey is a blind scholar working on this very thing. Some rabbis and scholars began creating a Braille system for Hebrew in the 1930s. Harvey slowly became blind over the course of his PhD work in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies at Brandeis University, and While Hebrew and Greek have both had Braille codes since the 1930s, several of the other ancient languages he works with did not have an existing Braille code. Thus, in 2017 and 2018 he worked with a small group of other scholars to create a Braille code that could represent the Mesopotamian languages of Sumerian and Akkadian. Despite a lack of support within formal academic structures, blind scholars from across fields help each other navigate difficulties in academia.

John Hull was a key intellectual figure in theological education and the development of multi-faith thinking with a similar story to Harvey. He learned in 1980 that he was losing his vision and it could not be saved. While grieving this loss, celebrating the birth of their son, and continuing in his theological work, John and his wife Marylin had to navigate the major changes in their life, finding ways for John to continue his scholarship.

In his audio diaries and the documentary based upon them, Hull recounts a conversation he had with a book publisher: Well, Im interested in reading contemporary social sciences. No, look, how do blind people read big books? They said, They dont.Hull did not let this stop him, though. Dozens of students worked for him recording readings of books for him to listen to. He recorded his thoughts on audio tapes and learned to lecture without notes.

Both Harveys and Hulls are stories of determination and overcoming. But they are also stories of white men who were already successfully engaged in higher education when they lost their sight. If it took extensive effort and massive support systems for them to continue in their studies, how much less accessible must such studies be to those situated at the intersections of disability and other disadvantaged groups.

Many who are blind or have other physical and developmental disabilities are unable to pursue theological education not because of their disabilities but because of the structures of our educational systems and our churches. If we really believed that God welcomes us all into relationship with God, would we construct such inaccessible structures of theological education?

Damon Rose lost his sight at 13 and reflects that his encounters with Christians tend to involve prayers for his healing and leave [him] feeling judged as faulty and in need of repair. Stories of Jesus healing people in the gospels lead many Christians to pray for similar healing for people with disabilities today. However, Lyndall Bywater, a blind Christian scholar, explains that Jesus was operating at a time when being disabled meant being poor, unemployed and excluded from mainstream society. Jesus did not merely heal physical ailments, but social ills. And excluding people from the fullest possible engagement of theological study and/or church life and blaming it on their disabilities is certainly a social ill. If being able to see is sort of necessary in our current schools and churches, then it is our responsibility as people of faith to change that.

Blind Tunisian Professor Sets a Standard for Others to Follow – Al-Fanar Media

Friday, December 4th, 2020

Of course, Al-Zaidis experience as a researcher was not without difficulties. Perhaps the simplest of those were related to reading original references, as university libraries usually lack references accessible to people with visual impairment. (See a related article, A Tunisian Scientist Invents Navigation Aid for the Blind.)

I sought help from my younger sister, who used to read what I asked of her from her references in English, he said, I am very grateful to her and also grateful for my fathers support. He explained that he was obsessed with the idea of success since childhood because I was keen to make them proud of me.

After being the first blind professor to teach at a Tunisian university, Al-Zaidi became the first blind minister in the Tunisian government and the second blind minister in the Arab world after the Nobel laureate novelist Taha Hussein, who held the position of Minister of Education in Egypt in 1950.

Al-Zaidis appointment did not last for more than a month, however. He was removed from office after he refused to immediately close cultural events, contradicting the governments directions regarding stopping the spread of the novel coronavirus.

In any case, his appointment was controversial. Many believed that his appointment was a message of encouragement for all persons with disabilities, while others believed that the position was not suitable for Al-Zaidis condition and that he did not have enough experience in political and administrative work to take on the position.

Today, Al-Zaidi aspires to prepare strategic research for the future of culture in Tunisia, and he is seeking to join the Tunisian Institute for Prospective Studies, affiliated with the Presidency of the Republic, to start research on the advancement of culture in Tunisia.

In addition to resuming his work as a university professor, Al-Zaidi expresses a desire to research music and its role in building bridges between people despite cultural differences. He is also working on a book related to blindness and language and how one can visualize what one does not see.

Al-Zaidi is a role model for many students in Tunisia, even if they do not have a disability. When I compare myself to him, I find no justification for failing to study, said Wissal Al-Barakati, a first-year university student at the Faculty of Sciences of Bizerte, part of the University of Carthage. Dr. Walid is a fundamental motivator for me and has taught me to make the impossible possible.

Al-Zaidi believes that will is the basis of success, although a supportive environment is essential to achieving it.

Through you, I address all students with disabilities in Tunisia and the Arab region, that there is nothing impossible. Everything is possible with diligence and perseverance, he said in an interview. Do not give up! Look around for those who support you and do not let physical disability hinder your thoughts and dreams.

New Survey Finds Critical Need for Education on Ca… | INN – Investing News Network

Friday, December 4th, 2020

Today, Johnson & Johnson Vision* announced findings from a new survey** that assessed awareness of cataracts among adults around the world. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness globally, 1 with more than 90% of people developing cataracts by age 65. 2 Yet, the survey reveals a significant lack of understanding of treatment options, including surgical procedures, to correct vision loss from cataracts.

Around the world, the majority (70%) of people said they are familiar with cataracts and even more know that surgery is the most common treatment option (85%). However, among those diagnosed or who have symptoms of cataracts, only 30% of Americans surveyed said they would be very likely to undergo cataract surgery. The most cited reason for not wanting to undergo cataract surgery was fear. Of those surveyed, 29% stated they are afraid of undergoing a cataract procedure and have concerns about the effectiveness of surgery (28%). In addition, many expressed a lack of knowledge about cataract procedures altogether (22%).

For many people suffering with cataracts, the word surgery can be intimidating. However, cataract surgery is safe and effective. In fact, its one of the most common outpatient procedures performed 3 , said Dr. Rajesh K. Rajpal , Chief Medical Officer and Global Head of Clinical and Medical Affairs, Johnson & Johnson Vision***. This survey uncovered a critical need for increased education, dialogue and reassurance between patients, loved ones and eye care providers.

Benefits of Treatment

Donald Smith , age 70, is retired and volunteers at a history museum. He recently underwent cataract surgery and encourages everyone to act on their cataracts, meet with their doctor and discuss a plan that is right for them. Donald shared his experience and said, My procedure went extremely well, and I have been opened to a whole new world of color and clarity. It was just like experiencing the Wizard of Oz movie, black and white to a vibrant world.

Importance of Education

According to Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) research, 4 3 out of 4 patients diagnosed with cataracts only discovered information about the condition and their treatment options post-diagnosis.

People need to know that cataracts are common and very effectively treated. The procedure is both safe and effective, with an extremely high success rate of improving patient vision. Additionally, cataract surgery techniques and technologies continue to evolve and advance, benefitting more patients than ever before. As eye care professionals, it is up to us to educate our patients on treatment options for cataracts, and that includes easing their fears by providing educational resources in channels where theyre seeking out medical information on social media and our practice websites, said Eric Donnenfeld , MD, Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, New York University ****.

Johnson & Johnson Vision encourages everyone to Prioritize Your Eyes by educating yourself to make more informed decisions around your, or your loved ones, care and to understand options leading up to and following surgery. Through the Prioritize Your Eyes campaign, Johnson & Johnson Vision is providing resources to educate people about the benefits and safety of treating cataracts so patient can make more informed decisions. More than 90% of people develop cataractsthe clouding and yellowing of the lens in the eyeby the age of 65 5 .While part of the normal aging of the eye, left untreated, cataracts cause vision to deteriorate over time. In fact, cataracts are the leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide, impacting more than 100 million eyes 6 .Cataract surgery is one of the most common outpatient procedures performed today and has a success rate of approximately 98% 7 .Today, cataract treatments can also offer patients vision correction, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses, in addition to removing the cataract. 8,9

Risk Information

While complications are rare, there are risks to routine cataract surgery. This is irrelevant to the lens you choose. The problems could be minor, temporary, or affect your vision permanently. These may include worsening of your vision, bleeding, or infection. Pre-existing diseases or conditions (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, and previous eye trauma) may place you at higher risk of experiencing complications and/or more difficult recovery after routine cataract surgery. With some lenses, you may experience some loss in the sharpness of your vision, even with glasses. A small number of patients may want to have their IOL removed. This can be due to lens-related optical/visual symptoms. You should discuss all risks and benefits with your eye doctor before surgery.

Not all the same: There are some hand sanitizers the FDA says consumers should avoid using. Heres the full list. – WHNT News 19

Friday, December 4th, 2020

(NEXSTAR) If the option to wash hands isnt available, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends hand sanitizer is an acceptable back in the sanitation fight against COVID-19.

With the rise in coronavirus cases across the United States, the federal Food and Drug Administration has noted a simultaneous increase in the number of hand sanitizer products being made but not all of them are made the same, which, in some cases, can be life-threatening.

Since August, the FDA has been adding to a list of hand sanitizer products and companies who have manufactured sanitizer that is labeled to contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) but that have tested positive for methanol contaminiation.

Heres why that matters: Methanol also known as wood alcohol can be toxic when absorbed through the skin. If ingested, the FDA says it can also be life-threatening. Enough exposure could cause nausea, vomiting, headaches, blurred vision, blindness, seizures, nervous system damage, coma or even death.

The agency is aware of adults and children ingesting hand sanitizer products contaminated with methanol that has led to recent adverse events, including blindness, hospitalizations and death, the agency noted on their website.

Children who accidently ingest hand sanitizer and those who may purposefully drink the substance as an alcohol substitute are the most at-risk.

So what should consumers be looking for?

The FDA has made a full list thats been updated as recently as last month, although the agency noted that its investigation of methanol in certain hand sanitizers is ongoing.

You can read and search the list in the table below.

Some other things the FDA is watching for, according to its website, include the following:

iHealthScreen’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Based Tool Can Accurately Diagnose Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Help Prevent Blindness -…

Friday, December 4th, 2020

RICHMOND HILL, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--iHealthScreen CEO Alauddin Bhuiyan, Ph.D. along with collaborators at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary at Mount Sinai (NYEEI), presented a prospective study for early diagnosis of AMD at the annual conference of AAO, 2020. The results presented during the prestigious Original Paper Session demonstrated 88.7% accuracy, compared to ophthalmologist gradings, on detecting referable AMD.

AMD, with no early signs or symptoms, is a leading cause of adult blindness in the developed world. Early detection can enable preventative measures in time and stop AMD incident. Currently, AMD diagnosis has been limited to retinal examination by an ophthalmologist. AMD cases in the U.S. are expected to grow from 2.1 million to 5.4 million in the next ten years, and there is an increasing need for large scale screening and identification of individuals who are at risk of developing late AMD. iHealthScreens AI based tool can facilitate this screening and help prevention of late AMD.

In an interview, Dr. Bhuiyan spoke about the study and the findings: We are encouraged by the results and believe that the new AI-based technology can diagnose early AMD in primary care settings, which enables the timely preventative measures by ophthalmologist and prevent this deterioration of vision. We want to express our sincerest thanks to the participants and professional staff who were involved in this clinical trial and gathered the data.

These results speak to the feasibility of this approach, said Theodore Smith, M.D., Ph.D., Trials Principal-investigator and Professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. I believe that the ease of use of iHealthScreens AI tool will contribute to its adoption in the wider primary care community.

About iHealthScreen

iHealthScreen is a private, clinical-stage, medical diagnostic/device company. iHealthScreen has developed iPredict, an AI and telemedicine-based HIPAA compliant platform for automated screening and prediction of individuals at risk of developing late age-related AMD, diabetic retinopathy (DR), glaucoma, cardiovascular heart disease and stroke.

The Report Includes:

Market growth is attributed to factors such as the growing prevalence of blindness and vision impairment, a rise in the world's geriatric population, and growing collaborations between vision care companies and technology companies for the advent of technologically advanced products to address current unmet needs.

According to the IAPB, nearly 1.1 billion people are considered to be affected by some form of vision loss: 43 million people are categorized as blind, about 553 million people are estimated to suffer from some form of moderate to severe visual impairment (MVSI), about 258 million people experience mild vision impairment and about 510 million suffer from near vision impairment. In addition, at least 1 billion more people need ongoing access to eye care services. High prevalence and the increasing burden of vision impairment is likely to drive the vision care market during the forecast period.

Reasons for Doing This Study:

Visual impairment is a global health concern that has a negative impact on both physical and mental wellbeing. Preventive blindness, a common vision disorder, represents a major challenge to the global healthcare system. Visual impairment is associated with loss of global productivity and high disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and is responsible for significant healthcare spending. According to the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), in 2020, nearly 1.1 billion people were considered to be affected by some form of vision loss; 43 million people are categorized as blind, about 553 million people are estimated to suffer from some form of Moderate and Severe Vision Impairment MSVI, about 258 million people experience mild vision impairment and about 510 million suffer from near vision impairment. Globally, the leading causes of vision impairment are uncorrected refractive errors and cataracts. Refractory disorders, particularly myopia, are one of the common ailments seen across all age groups. The incidence of refractory disorders is estimated to have doubled in the last decade compared to past generations, with the rise driven by rapid changes in lifestyles, genetic disorders, and malnutrition. Refractory disorders, although increasingly prevalent, can be treated and are considered preventable ailments if addressed quickly.

Market growth has been spurred by the introduction of technologically advanced products and the rise in the global visually impaired population. Treatment to restore vision by injecting stem cells into the eye could help people with damaged eyesight – iNews

Friday, December 4th, 2020

An effective new treatment to restore vision is on the horizon that works by injecting genetically modified stem cells into the eye to mend the damaged retina.

Researchers found that the cells of damaged retinas send out a rescue signal to attract the stem cells that repair eye damage.

The i newsletter latest news and analysis

They identified two of these cell signals known as Ccr5 and Cxcr6 and then genetically engineered the stem cells to make them more sensitive to those signals.

When these modified stem cells were transplanted back into mice and human tissue samples in the lab they flocked to the retina cells in much greater numbers, keeping the tissue of the damaged retina alive and functioning.

The technique holds promise for improving sight in people with poor vision and potentially even to cure blindness altogether but the researchers cautioned that any such development was some years away and required much bigger studies to confirm their findings.

One of the main hurdles in using stem cells to treat damaged eyesight is low cell migration and integration in the retina, says Pia Cosma, at the Centre for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona.

After the cells are transplanted they need to reach the retina and integrate through its layers. Here we have found a way to enhance this process using stem cells commonly found in the bone marrow, but in principle can be used with any transplanted cells, Dr Cosma said.

There is still considerable work to be done, but our findings could make stem cell transplants a feasible and realistic option for treating visual impairment and restoring eyesight, she said.

Retinal damage, which is currently incurable, inevitably leads to visual disabilities and in most cases blindness. With a growing and ageing population, the number of people affected by retinal damage is estimated to increase dramatically over the next few decades.

Stem cell therapies have been touted as one way of treating degenerative retinal conditions. Stem cells can be transplanted into the eye, releasing therapeutic molecules with neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties that promote the survival, proliferation and self-repair of retinal cells. The stem cells can also generate new retinal cells, replacing lost or damaged ones.

The researchers used mesenchymal stem cells, which are found in bone marrow and can differentiate into lots of types of cells, including retinal cells that respond to light.

Mesenchymal stem cells can also be easily grown outside an organism, providing abundant starting material for transplantation compared to other cell sources such as hematopoietic stem cells.

The study is published in the journal Molecular Therapy.

Nidia Recalls Original Plans For Her Blindness Gimmick, Says She Got Ribbed While Staying In Character On The Road – Wrestlezone

Friday, December 4th, 2020

Nidiarecalls how hard it was getting a meal when youre storyline blind.

The former Tough Enough winner recentlyspoke with Fightful, and Nidia talked about how her blindness gimmick required her to keep up kayfabe and what the original plans for her storyline were.Nidia went blind as a result of getting green mist sprayed in her face by Tajiri, leading to her boyfriend Jamie Noble taking advantage of her condition to try and help his own career. As Nidia explained it, she really had to live the gimmick on the road, which led to some rather funny stories.

We would go overseas, and they would be like, Hey, Nidia. Remember that youre blind. So, I dont want to see you out in the lobby walking around and then you have to go pretend youre blind at the show. Cause that just kills it. So, thats the thing, right? One day we got in, we were in Australia, and I called. Dawn Nothing. Torrie? Nothing. Jamie? Nothing. Theyre all gone, right? So, Im just like, Damnit, Im fucking hungry. So, I get in the elevator, hoping that Im not going to run into anyone and I run into Bob Holly. I was like, Dude, Im hungry. I need to go downstairs and I need to get some food. Can you guide me through the crowd? I bumped into every single wall and plant and anything. It was just, Whoops, watch out for that. I was like, Fuck, just get me to my meal. It was the longest walk.

Nidia also revealed her storyline originally had much more detail involved, but it didnt make it to air and was a bit different than the final product.

We talked to Vince, you remember how we won that money, right? Or we inherited that money. We were going to get that money, and Torrie got into Playboy, and they were like, What youre gonna go to the best Swedish doctor and youre gonna go, cause I was going to get breast augmentation and I needed some time off. So, thats a lot of information, huh? So, I was going to get a breast augmentation. I asked for the time off. They approved, so they wrote it into the storyline. What they wanted to do was to send me to the best doctor in Sweden and I was gonna come back, and we were going to highlight them, etc, etc. That was the way the story was going to go, and Jamie was like, Thats kind of anticlimactic. How far is that going to go? Which, in hindsight, it probably would have gone far, right? But, we pitched a different direction and he said, Yes, and they made me blind. I was just like, We shouldnt have messed with him. Now hes messing with me. He made me blind!

Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine Partners With MANRRS to Increase Diversity in Veterinary Profession – Business Wire

Friday, December 4th, 2020

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Pet owners represent a much more diverse population than the veterinary professionals who care for them and their animals, a gap the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA)1 and the Association of American Veterinary Colleges (AAVMC) 2 are working hard to fill. Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) is committed to being part of the solution and is proud to announce a new partnership with Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS). This collaboration will further RUSVMs long-term commitment to increase diversity in the veterinary profession and strengthen the pipeline of highly qualified, diverse students pursuing an education in veterinary medicine.

The partnership will introduce RUSVM to MANRRS chapters across the U.S. with MANRRS members gaining access to exclusive webinars and virtual workshops from RUSVM to increase exposure to the profession. Additionally, qualified students may apply for a newly launched MANRRS scholarship. The partnership will also help establish a professional chapter of MANRRS at RUSVM that will create mentoring opportunities for current RUSVM students and enhanced networking opportunities. To learn more about this partnership, click here.

It is vitally important that the field of veterinary medicine is representative of the communities that we serve, and Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine is thrilled to take this important step toward increasing diversity in the field, said Sean Callanan, MVB, CERTVR, MRCVS, PHD, FRCPATH, DIPLECVP, dean of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. As one of the most ethnically diverse AVMA-accredited veterinary schools, the partnership with MANRRS will provide new opportunities for prospective, current and former students, and pave the way for a more diverse workforce.

According to an American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA) report, more than one-third of African Americans surveyed own a pet. However, the vast majority of practicing veterinarians in the U.S. are white3, highlighting a disparity in the diversity of the profession and the people that they serve.

While facing the dismal reality that more than 85% of Veterinarians are white, MANRRS is committed to partnering with RUSVM to provide underrepresented students access to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, said Ebony Webber, chief operating officer for MANRRS. Provided that MANRRS is one of the only and largest organizations focused on diverse talent in agriculture, our student and professional members expect MANRRS to advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in areas where minorities are needed to help solve the worlds biggest challenges relating to animal health.

RUSVM, supported by its parent company, Adtalem Global Education, is committed to cultivating a culture of diversity and inclusivity and creating a diverse global workforce that reflects that culture. To learn more about Adtalems commitment to diversity and inclusion, click here.

Dairy Cattle Specialist Added To Veterinary Education – Texas A&M Today – Texas A&M University Today

Friday, December 4th, 2020

Benjamin Newcomer is the VERO programs first and only faculty member specializing in dairy cattle.

Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences

Dr. Benjamin Newcomer has been hired by the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) Veterinary Education, Research, & Outreach (VERO) program as the first and so far, only faculty member to specialize in dairy cattle.

Its a specialty much-needed in Texas. He will be located at the West Texas A&M University campus in Canyon.

Newcomer was raised in Guatemala, and saw the importance of rural agricultural communities and the importance of animal care from an early age. He went on to earn his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from the University of Florida.

One thing I really like about veterinary medicine is that every days different. Theres always something new. It never gets humdrum, Newcomer said. My dad was an agriculture teacher, so I had always been exposed to cattle growing up and just loved being outside and loved the people who usually work with cattle.

Newcomer worked at a large dairy practice in central California practicing dairy production medicine. He spent two years working through the Christian Veterinary Mission to support local farmers in Central Africa before returning stateside to join the faculty of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.

VERO, a partnership between the CVMBS and West Texas A&M, brings veterinary students to the heart of one of the most productive animal agricultural regions in the world, opening opportunities for students to collaborate in hands-on projects with industry partners and stakeholders both in the region and across the nation.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Newcomer to the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences and VERO faculty. He brings to our program an exciting combination of dairy practice experience and teaching skills that will allow VERO to continue providing first-class, hands-on education to our students, saidDr. Susan Eades, head of the CVMBS Large Animal Clinical Sciences Department. His experience in working in the industry will also help the program continue in its mission of strengthening community relations and the veterinary field.

Newcomers affinity for dairy production medicine meshes well with the goals of VERO, which serves the Texas Panhandle region by training highly qualified veterinary students with the rural animal medicine skills required to meet the regions needs.

Dr. Newcomers skills reach almost two decades of experience in multiple states and countries, said Dee Griffin, director of the VERO program. He is perhaps the most academically prepared clinical dairy management professor in the U.S.

The extremely large dairies we have in the Texas Panhandle and High Plains are extremely sophisticated. Dr. Newcomer is one of the few veterinarians in the U.S. we could have recruited who is capable of navigating the level of expertise required to work with dairies of this magnitude and be able to develop a dairy clinical veterinary and management program for our CVMBS students.

Newcomer believes that the history and tradition of Texas A&Ms veterinary program is unrivaled.

Were known for producing quality veterinary graduates, Newcomer said. The VERO program, in particular, is geographically situated in a growing area with lots of cattle where students can get hands-on experience, and that made this position really attractive to me as an educator.

The work of VERO and its supporting veterinarians, like Newcomer, is vitally important to supporting the stability of the nations food supply. The Texas Panhandle is home to the third-largest milk producing area in the nation, in addition to roughly 13 million head of cattle more than any other state. The Texas Department of Agriculture values this industry at $12.3 billion.

Ensuring we have a safe and sustainable food source is important and its something that we sometimes take for granted, Newcomer said. Theres a lack of exposure if you havent grown up around agriculture and you just assume our foods going to be there.

Over the past 10 years, the Texas Panhandle has become one of the major dairy areas, and there are lots of producers and veterinarians who would love to have students come by and get involved, he said. VEROs nicely situated where we can make those relationships and get those students out for those experiences.

Local veterinary clinic sees increase in visits during the pandemic – WKBN.com

Friday, December 4th, 2020

They have also instituted protocols to keep visitors and themselves safe

by: Brandon Jaces

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) A lot of people are working from home and one positive to that, or PAW-sitive, is that individuals get to spend more time with their pets.

So theyre noticing when theyre scratching or when they might not be eating, versus they were at work all day so they may not have seen whats going on at home, said Courtney ONeill, doctor of veterinary medicine at the Austintown Veterinary Clinic.

Theyre doing their best to keep up with everyone. She said each doctor sees around 15 to 20 patients per day.

Each patient takes longer because we have to get a patient from a car, get the history, were doing exams back in the treatment area, so were trying to minimize the time that our staff and our doctors are in a room with a person, ONeill said. Deep cleaning the rooms after each appointment.

To accommodate as many people as possible, theyre allowing people to drop off their pets so that they have more time to see them, run diagnostics and help as many animals as they can.

Theyve also instituted some protocols for visitors to follow, which include calling from the parking lot when they arrive, one person per pet allowed inside, mandatory face coverings and rescheduling if people dont feel well or have been exposed to the coronavirus. Each exam is done back in a treatment room, instead of in a room with the owner. Staff will check people out from the exam room, theres a 24-hour notice for prescription refills or written requests, and patients must call from the parking lot for medication and food pick-ups.

We can absolutely get the pet from your car, and you can stay in the car so you dont even need to come in, ONeill said as an option for visitors. Were doing payment over the phone so you dont even need to come in and slide your credit card. We can keep as much distance as youd like.

Dr. Scott Moore named West Virginia Veterinarian of the Year – Times-West Virginian

Friday, December 4th, 2020

FAIRMONT From an early age, it seems Dr. Scott Moore was destined to become the West Virginia Veterinary Medical Associations Veterinarian of the Year.

In 2020, he achieved just that.

The son of local veterinarian Dr. Jamie Moore, Scott grew up next door to his fathers practice and spent his formative years alongside his dad.

When I was born, my fathers office was over on Watson Hill and we lived in the house across the parking lot from it. As a little kid, when I got out of school, Id simply run across the parking lot to see my dad and what was going on. Ive always been around veterinary medicine. I literally grew up in the profession, Moore said.

Moore, whos been a veterinarian himself now for 14 years, is the owner of Fairmont Veterinary Hospital on Gaston Avenue, the same practice his father began many years ago.

A graduate of North Marion High School and West Virginia University, Moore earned his doctorate from The Ohio State Universitys veterinary school. Upon graduation, he returned to Fairmont in order to practice veterinary medicine with his father. The two remain colleagues today.

Dr. George Seiler, the owner of Paw Prints Veterinary Clinic in Morgantown and a longtime friend and colleague of Moore, commended him on becoming Veterinarian of the Year.

Ive known Scott since his childhood and have watched him come up through his schooling. Hes an excellent veterinarian, whos been highly-active in the West Virginia Veterinary Medical Association. Hes also been active since the inception of the North Central West Virginia Regional Veterinary Emergency Clinic at the Pricketts Creek exit in Fairmont. I cant think of anyone else more deserving of the award, Seiler said.

Moore said in addition to being nearby his fathers practice as a youth, animals were always a presence in the family home.

We always had pets growing up. Ive been around all different kinds of animals all my life. I even participated in the 4-H market livestock programs, always raising sheep and steers, marketing them and selling them, he said. When I moved to Columbus to attend veterinary school, I was in an apartment by myself, so I got two cats. Animals have always been nearby.

Moore said his passion for taking care of pets has never waned.

With veterinary medicine, its the opportunity to have your mind challenged from a new angle at every moment and then getting to see the positive outcomes in pets, he said. Its also the understanding youre not simply helping a pet, youre helping the people who love them. People have such tight bonds with their pets. If we help one cat, it actually helps a whole family of people at home.

During this years Covid-19 pandemic, Moore said people have learned more than ever the value a pet brings to ones life.

One of the things weve noticed throughout this Covid quarantine situation is if someone lives alone, having the companionship of an animal is immensely important. Being able to keep animals healthy in order for individuals to stay mentally healthy is really an undervalued part of what we do, Moore said.

He added a little-known fact that pet adoption has reached an all-time high this year.

Nationwide, the shelter population today is at its lowest in decades. People, especially in major cities, got locked in on quarantine. Theyre in a small apartment by themselves and think I need someone. So, theyve gone and rescued a dog. Or theyve rescued a cat, Moore said. There are major metropolitan cities today with animal shelters that are completely empty. Were talking shelters with capacities of three or four hundred dogs and theyve adopted them all out. Its awesome because those people sought the companionship of an animal.

Moore said a key to becoming a good veterinarian is being a lifelong learner.

Im mentally learning all the time. Thats why we refer to medicine a practice. Every day, a veterinarian should be learning and broadening his or her scope, he said.

Moore said part of that professional growth is undertaking hard-to-solve pet cases. Unlike humans, pets cannot verbalize their ailments, which puts more of an onus on veterinarians to properly diagnose the situation.

Sometimes we get pets with really weird issues, so it takes talking with specialists at Ohio State or Auburn or other places. I can end up talking to someone in California whos the only expert in the country on a specific disease, Moore said. We may have gone down a crazy circuitous path, but if it gets us to a resolution where we can manage the issue, the pet can live a good or better quality life. At the end of the day, those are some of the high-five moments.

The veterinary world is surprisingly small, he said, which is often helpful when dealing with a crisis illness or needing to address a rare disorder.

There are only about 87,000 veterinarians in the county and we graduate only about 2,200 students from veterinary school each year nationwide. Theres no six degrees of Kevin Bacon. Theres only three degrees. If you make the right calls, you can get somewhere pretty fast, Moore said.

As one might imagine, the most difficult time for a veterinarian is ending a beloved pets life when other options have been exhausted. Unlike people doctors, veterinarians are often charged with euthanizing pets in order to end their suffering.

The flip side is we always have to talk about letting animals go, too. We help guide people through that process. Its not rewarding, but its so vitally important. We have to see it for what it is. At times, its a relief for everybody. Its a hard decision to make and we have to help people work through it, Moore said.

He said that aspect of his business is perhaps the most trying.

Its a very difficult thing on lots of veterinarians and their staff that have to be part of that. I dont like it, but we have to see it for what it is and, in a lot of cases, its helpful for the separating pet. Its difficult, but its such an imperative part of what we do, he said.

Fairmont Veterinary Hospital today employs seven veterinarians and more than 50 support staff. Moore credited his colleagues for their respective roles in making his organization as success.

Im really lucky to have great staff members, some who were around when I was a kid and have been working here for thirty-plus years. Ive got a phenomenal team thats extremely dedicated and skilled. Id go the extent of calling them the best veterinary staff in the whole state. Their training and dedication are a blessing. I dont take them for granted, he said. Its my name on the plaque, but its everybody elses award.

Companion Sciences Innovative Formulation Start-Up Focusing on Bioavailability Research Announces Completion of CBD + Glucosamine Study with…

Friday, December 4th, 2020

NEW YORK, Dec. 03, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Companion Sciences, a start-up that is investigating the ability of CBD to potentiate the bioavailability of a range of nutrients and other compounds creating a post-commodity future for CBD today announced the completion of a tolerability and palatability trial, utilizing its patent-pending CBD + Glucosamine chew in dogs.

In the study, conducted by The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicines Blue Buffalo Veterinary Clinical Trials Office (BBVCTO), under the supervision of the BBVCTO associate director, Companion Sciences chews were administered to a representative group of dogs, over a 42-day period. Dogs were between the ages of 4.8 and 9.5 years. Diagnostics conducted during the trial included physical examinations and routine blood and urine analyses.

We are encouraged by these tolerability and palatability results said Golan Vaknin, CEO of Companion Science. A critical milestone, as part of our mission as an R&D company is to bring a new level of evidence-based validation to the wild west that characterizes the CBD market. This study was an essential step in that journey; it follows on our baseline research, led by our Research Director Dr. Tami Bar and conducted by the prestigious Pharmacology Discovery Services in Taiwan. This study found that our formulation achieved high-levels of bio-absorption in a rat model, including penetration into the synovial fluid, the seat of joint inflammation.

Following this research study, Companion Sciences is planning to launch a safety and efficacy clinical trial with dogs suffering from osteoarthritis. The trial will include proprietary formulation cocktails that combine CBD with other nutrients and compounds previously shown to support healthy joint mobility, to demonstrate how the Companys bioavailability-powering formulations can achieve measurable results and local availability.

About COMPANION SCIENCES

COMPANION SCIENCES is a life-sciences company with a research focus on novel formulations of CBD that potentiate the bio-absorption of a range of nutraceuticals and food supplements, while simultaneously enhancing the availability of CBD itself. We are pursuing patent-protected cocktail formulations that address a range of needs, among people and pets, related to physical and emotional well-being.

For Cancer-Related Breathlessness, Fans May Be Better Bet Than Meds – Cancer Health Treatment News

Friday, December 4th, 2020

People with advanced cancer who experience breathlessness may benefit more from non-pharmacological interventions, such as handheld fan use, than medications, researchers at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore have found.

Breathlessness is a common symptom of advanced metastatic cancer. As the body weakens, respiration becomes progressively more difficult, causing considerable anxiety and negatively affecting quality of life in the process. It is a major source of patient and caregiver distress, the researchers, led by Arjun Gupta, MD, wrote in the journal JAMA Oncology.

Oncologists have historically prescribed medications such as opioids and benzodiazepines for cancer-caused breathlessness, Gupta told MedPage Today. These drugs slow breathing, but their ability to provide relief to people with cancer is not strongly supported by available evidence.

The results of this study suggest that non-pharmacological interventions, including counseling, physical activity and touch therapyor some combination of the threeshould actually be the first line of defense. We believe these findings should catalyze a shift in how we approach and treat breathlessness, Gupta said.

Gupta and coauthors came to this conclusion by reviewing 29 recent studies on the impact of non-pharmacological interventions on 2,423 adults with advanced cancer. The interventions fell into several categories: respiratory, behavioral and psychoeducational, activity and rehabilitation, integrative medicine and multicomponent.

Nine of the 29 studies focused on respiratory interventions such as fan therapy and bilevel ventilation. Fan therapy is as simple as it sounds: A fan, often handheld, blows either room-temperature or cold air toward the mouth and nose of the person experiencing breathlessness. This may fool the brain into believing that respiration is more effective than it actually is, reducing physical discomfort. Bilevel ventilation refers to breathing on ones own while simultaneously being supported by a ventilator.

Seven studies focused on activity and rehabilitation interventions, such as exercise therapy, respiratory training and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation; four focused on integrative medicine interventions, such as music therapy, acupressure, acupuncture and reflexology; and three focused on behavioral and psychoeducational interventions, such as behavioral therapy. Six of the 29 studies focused on multicomponent interventionsin other words, some combination of the four types.

In a statistical analysis of all 29 studies, the researchers found that some, although not all, of the interventions were associated with a modest to significant improvement in symptoms. Successful interventions included fan therapy and bilevel ventilation (in inpatient settings) and acupressure, reflexology and multicomponent interventions (in outpatient settings); unsuccessful interventions included behavioral therapy and relaxation.

Only five of the 29 studies reported that participants experienced any adverse effects at all, meaning that all interventions were relatively safe. By contrast, a 2016 study on opioids for the treatment of breathlessness reported that participants were 4.73 times more likely to experience nausea, vomiting, drowsiness and constipation than controls.

In view of the evidence, the researchers wrote, Guidelines and clinical practice should evolve to incorporate non-pharmacological interventions as first-line treatment for adults with advanced cancer and breathlessness.

However, they acknowledged that many people with cancer may face financial, logistical or physical barriers to accessing these treatments, adding several paragraphs down, Ultimately, an individualized approach to managing breathlessness in patients with advanced cancer is necessary.
