House seeks probe on stem-cell therapy link to solons’ deaths

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

Should there be a law on stem cell therapy? The House of Representatives (HOR) has no idea. And for the sake of finding answer, House leaders intend to consult with medical experts about the issues surrounding the procedure. Speaker Feliciano Sonny Belmonte Jr. admits lawmakers need an expert opinion before they take any legislative action on reports about the negative effects of the expensive treatment. At this point, we have absolutely no basis to say that it was wrong (or) it wasnt wrong (or) it should be regulated, it should not be regulated, Belmonte said. Belmonte issued the statement after the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) said it is looking into the recent deaths of three politicians, who died after receiving xenogenic treatment in Germany. PMA president Dr. Leo Olarte said his group is still trying to find out whether politicians died due to their illness or due to hypersensitive reaction from animal-based stem cell treatments they received. On Monday, Belmonte revealed that Camiguin Rep. Pedro Romualdo underwent stem cell treatment in Germany before he died in April due to pneumonia. Incoming Bohol Rep. Aris Aumentado also admitted his father, the late Bohol Rep. Erico Aumentado, had undergone similar treatment in September before he died last Christmas, also due to pneumonia. We are still awaiting the word of the experts and the medical experts, not political experts on how, if anything, is demanded from us, Belmonte said. Olarte, who is the spokesperson of Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine, cited initial information that the politicians received stem cell therapy that used sheeps. He reiterated that receiving animal-based stem cell is dangerous because it may trigger complications such as graft versus host reaction. The expert advised Filipinos and public officials to choose autologous adult stem cell treatment, which is derived from the patients own blood, bone marrow or fat. Last March, the Department of Health (DOH) has restricted hospitals and other facilities from using genetically-altered cells and tissues of human in carrying out stem-cell therapy and treatments in the country. Health secretary Enrique Ona added their department also prohibits the use of umbilical cord, fat-derived human stem cells, and live animal stem cells for the conduct of the procedure locally.

ONA released Administrative Order (AO) 2013-0012, which seeks to ensure the safety of people who want to undergo human stem cell and cell-based therapies.

Stem cell therapy in 5-star hotels? Group sees scam

Monday, June 24th, 2013

By Jocelyn R. Uy Philippine Daily Inquirer

This stem cell therapy could be hazardous to your health.

The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) on Sunday warned Filipinos against availing themselves of the so-called xenogenic stem cell therapy from foreign doctors who fly into the country and perform the procedure in five-star hotels in Metro Manila.

The doctors organization also announced that it had already tapped the help of the National Bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police to look into the scam, which it said tainted the legitimate practice of stem cell or regenerative medicine in the country.

Dr. Leo Olarte, PMA president and spokesperson of the Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine (PSSCM), disclosed that the two medical groups had received complaints from patients and their relatives who had undergone such stem cell procedures allegedly performed in the country by German doctors.

Based on the complaints, Olarte said the patients were asked to check in at a five-star hotel in the capital, where they were injected with animal-based stem cells at around P1 million per shot.

These foreigners are not even licensed to practice medicine in the country and are in violation of the Medical Act of 1959, Olarte stressed. We are then asking government regulators and enforcers, especially the NBI and the PNP, to investigate these criminal acts.

He warned Filipino doctors to stop collaborating with unscrupulous foreign counterparts or the organization would file criminal cases against them.

If you will continue doing this, we will file criminal cases against you, said Olarte, an orthopedic surgeon and practicing lawyer.

The doctor also stressed that the autologous adult stem cell treatmentderived from the patients own blood, bone marrow or fatwas the only approved stem cell therapy by the Department of Health (DOH) because it had already been proven as the safest procedure available worldwide.

2 congressmen who died after stem cell therapy named

Monday, June 24th, 2013

MANILA - House Speaker Sonny Belmonte said 2 congressmen died after having stem cell therapy overseas.

These are congressmen Erico Aumentado and Pedro Romualdo.

Belmonte, however, clarified that it has not been established whether stem cell therapy was the cause of death.

Belmonte said that after having stem cell therapy, the 2 felt rejuvenated and may have exerted themselves during the last election campaign.

Belmonte said Aumentado even started walking around without a cane.

Aumentado' son Aristotle, a first-term congressman, was introduced by Belmonte to media during the sidelines of the executive course the lower House sponsored for neophytes.

Aristotle said his father died of pneumonia. He added there is also no proof that stem cell caused the death.

In fact, he said they were scheduled for another treatment after the elections had his father not died.

Aristotle said the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) has not approached them for the PMA's investigation into the deaths of 3 politicians who died after receiving stem cell therapy abroad.

Aristotle explained that his father had leg thrombosis for which he had to undergo bifemoral bypass and stem cell therapy .

Was Stem Cell therapy behind death of 3 Solons?

Monday, June 24th, 2013

Manila, Philippines --- Several congressmen have indeed undergone stem cell therapy in Germany and two of them died while serving the 15th Congress.

This was gathered from several sources as one outgoing congressman disclosed that a group of Mindanao mayors are set to depart for Europe to visit stem cell clinics in Germany.

''But virility and aesthetic enhancements are the reasons for the trip,'' said outgoing Agham Party-list Rep. Angelo Palmones in an interview yesterday.

Palmones admitted that one of the veteran solons who died during the 15th Congress was a stem cell therapy patient but whether or not the procedure contributed to his death remains unknown.

''He died of heart attack but the purpose of his stem cell treatment was to improve virility,'' said Palmones, outgoing vice chairman of the House Committee on Science and Technology.

Two others reportedly flew to Europe to seek treatment for cancer but both died.

A former broadcaster, Palmones authored House Resolution No. 1075 calling for a congressional investigation in aid of legislation on the operation of stem cell therapy clinics in malls in a bid to ensure the ''safety and security of patients.''

In a press statement the other day, the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) aired suspicions that ''three politicians'' from Mindanao may have died due to stem cell treatments from unauthorized practitioners.

Stem cell therapy in Philippines’ 5-star hotels a scam, says group

Monday, June 24th, 2013

Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - This stem cell therapy could be hazardous to your health.

The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) on Sunday warned Filipinos against availing themselves of the so-called "xenogenic" stem cell therapy from foreign doctors who fly into the country and perform the procedure in five-star hotels in Metro Manila.

The doctors' organisation also announced that it had already tapped the help of the National Bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police to look into the scam, which it said tainted the legitimate practice of stem cell or regenerative medicine in the country.

Based on the complaints, Olarte said the patients were asked to check in at a five-star hotel in the capital, where they were injected with animal-based stem cells at around 1 million pesos (US$22,800) per shot.

"These foreigners are not even licensed to practice medicine in the country and are in violation of the Medical Act of 1959," Olarte stressed. "We are then asking government regulators and enforcers, especially the NBI and the PNP, to investigate these criminal acts."

He warned Filipino doctors to stop collaborating with unscrupulous foreign counterparts or the organisation would file criminal cases against them.

"If you will continue doing this, we will file criminal cases against you," said Olarte, an orthopedic surgeon and practising lawyer.

The doctor also stressed that the autologous adult stem cell treatmentderived from the patient's own blood, bone marrow or fatwas the only approved stem cell therapy by the Department of Health (DOH) because it had already been proven as the safest procedure available worldwide.

He discouraged Filipinos from considering xenogenic stem cell sources or those derived from animals and plants, as well as allogeneic sources or from other human beings, due to the many instances of deadly complications from these procedures.

Wellington Chen, M.D. of Advanced Rejuvenation Introduces Stem Cell Therapy For OsteoArthritis & COPD in Sarasota …

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

Sarasota, Florida (PRWEB) June 18, 2013

After almost 20 years of performing regenerative treatments in the field of non surgical orthopedics, Wellington Chen, M.D., will begin conducting clinical trials for many degenerative diseases using adipose-derived stem cell therapy in Sarasota, Florida. The independent review board of the International cell medicine society is responsible for overseeing these trials.

Advanced Rejuvenation will treat patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and osteoarthritis following the IRB-approved protocols. Advanced Rejuvenation will be using adult autologous stem cells, harvested from the patients own adipose (fat) tissue or bone marrow if fat is not available. Because patients are receiving their own cells, there is no risk of rejection. As of 2007, over 9,000 studies have shown the safety using these cell lines.

Autologous stem cell therapy are your bodies repair men. They are circulated throughout your body and as soon as there is a need for them, chemical messages trigger them to migrate to the area and do their magic. They are both immune modulating and also regenerative which makes them a great therapeutic agent for osteoarthritis and COPD. Numerous studies have shown them to have the capacity to grow new cartilage, muscle, ligaments, glands and even organs. We believe stem cell treatments will become the future of care for most orthopedic problems avoiding the need for surgery. With COPD, when stem cells are run into the blood stream through an IV they will mostly pass through the lungs. We are excited to be apart of these research studies.

Advanced Rejuvenation trained under scientist Kristin Comella, CEO of Stemlogix. She was recently named in the Wall Street Journal as one of the 50 most influential people on stem cell research. Advanced Rejuvenation will implement Stemlogixs patented extraction process, allowing for an exceptionally high yield and viability of stem cells from fat.

During the in-office and same day procedure, a mini liposuction is performed. A half of a cup of fat in harvested from around the abdominal region which produces approximately 8 million stem cells. The stem cells are isolated put back into the patients joints or with COPD via an IV infusion. Local anesthesia is all that is needed and pain medication can be prescribed but is rarely necessary.

Advanced Rejuvenation has treated various orthopedic conditions for 4 years using fat transfer and now offers these treatments to patients ranging from NFL players to retired golfers. SanBio Announces FDA Clearance for the Initiation of a Phase I/2a Clinical Trial Testing Their Cell Therapy Product …

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- SanBio Inc., a California-based regenerative medicine company, announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved their Investigational New Drug application (IND) for the use of SB623, a novel allogeneic stem cell therapy product, in patients suffering from traumatic brain injuries (TBI's). This approval allows the company to proceed with a Phase 1/2a clinical trial testing the safety and feasibility of the therapy. The clinical trial is expected to be carried out at several major hospitals in the United States.

"This is the second clinical program for SanBio," said Keita Mori, SanBio's Chief Executive Officer, "we see this as a clear validation of our development program and a significant broadening of the therapeutic application of our lead product SB623 for the treatment of unaddressed chronic neurological deficits."

"We measure the responses of TBI patients to physical therapy every day. Progress is often painfully slow and incremental," said Dr. Daniel Lu, Principal Investigator, Neuroplasticity and Repair Laboratory and Director, Neuromotor Recovery Research Center, University of California, Los Angeles, "If this new cell therapy approach improves outcomes it could have a dramatic positive effect on many lives."

About Traumatic Brain Injury: According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more the 1.7 million people in the United States sustain a traumatic brain injury each year, resulting in approximately 50,000 deaths and 275,000 hospitalizations. Many of these more severely injured patients suffer permanent disabilities, including loss of motor function and cognitive impairment. Other than physical rehabilitation there is no effective therapy. Direct medical costs and indirect costs such as lost productivity of TBI totaled an estimated $76.5 billion in the United States in 2000.

About SB623: SB623 is a proprietary cell therapy product consisting of cells derived from genetically modified bone marrow stromal cells obtained from healthy adult donors. SB623 is administered adjacent to the damaged area of the brain. SB623 functions by producing factors that aid the regenerative process.

About SanBio: SanBio is a privately held San Francisco Bay Area biotechnology company focused on the discovery and development of new regenerative cell therapy products.

Lewis County man hopes for stem cell therapy

Friday, June 7th, 2013

VANCEBURG | A Lewis County man is working his way toward stem cell therapy in an attempt to help him walk again.

Jennifer Richardson, a long-time friend of Anthony Schumacher, said Schumacher was involved in an accident in December 2012, which left him paralyzed.

According to Richardson, Schumacher was in a comma for a few days and has no memory of the accident.

"He was going to work when his tire blew out and he wrecked the car," Richardson said. "He was in a coma for days and when he woke up he was paralyzed from the belly button down and couldn't remember anything."

Tammy Moore, Schumacher's mother, said he keeps a positive attitude about his situation.

"He's a happy person," she said. "He works out everyday and tries to learn new things about his situation and the procedure."

Moore said she would like to see Schumacher get the therapy.

"I don't know a lot about it. I'm still learning about it," she said. "But, from what I've seen, it's a good thing that can help him get at least some of the feeling back, if not all. I want to see him get it, if it can help."

Schumacher said he looks forward to the possibility of the procedure, too.

"I'm hopeful," he said. "I want to get it done. I've been trying to do my research and I would like to do this."

Paralyzed Dog Receives Stem Cell Therapy

Friday, June 7th, 2013

HIALEAH (CBSMiami) A team of Hialeah veterinarians performed a groundbreaking medical procedure on a dog to help him walk again.

Brando, a 9-year-old German shepherd, received an innovative two-part stem cell therapy at Paradise Animal Clinic in Hialeah on Wednesday. Its the first time this type of therapy has been performed in Florida.

The dog had been paralyzed from the waist down since January and used a doggie wheelchair to get around.

Vets said that he had a skin infection that paralyzed his lungs and then spread to a disc in his back. The infection caused 80 percent of Brandos leg muscles to weaken.

We were totally emotionally destroyed. Kids were crying, wife was upset, I was upset, said owner Manuel Bouza. Obviously the issue was he was so sick whether we put him down because hes paralyzed or whether we deal with it.

Bouza said that they wanted to do whatever they could to help him. One day, he stumbled across a video on YouTube about a dog in Great Britain who had received a stem cell treatment and he became interested.

With no proven options for recovery, they decided to try an experimental stem cell procedure never performed before in Florida.

This is a last ditch effort, said Bouza.

During the procedure, surgeons took fat from Brandos stomach and processed out the stem cells which were then re-injected into his spinal cord. They hope the cells will regenerate tissue and help Brando become more mobile.

The idea is that stem cells are able to go to a given place in the body and repair, said said animal surgeon Jose Gorostiza. Hopefully they will help the cells that are there function again, the new ones.
