Healing Dose of Optimism: The Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs of 2019 Will Have You Cheering – Good News Network

Saturday, December 28th, 2019

From zeroing in on different cancer cures to restoring vision and hearing to the blind and deaf2019 was a year filled with medical breakthroughs.

While some of these accomplishments may be varied in their stages of research, each notable study is just one more milestone towards treating some of humanitys most debilitating conditions.

So without any further ado, lets give it up for the top ten health and medical breakthroughs of 2019.

An exciting study that was published back in January found that exposure to blue light is an effective, non-pharmaceutical treatment for high blood pressure, which simultaneously reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

The researchers who conducted the study from the University of Surrey and Heinrich Heine University Duesseldorf discovered that exposure to whole-body blue light significantly reduced the systolic blood pressure of participants by almost 8 mmHg, compared to the control light which had no impact.

Whats even more remarkable is that the reduction of blood pressure from blue light is similar to what is seen in clinical trials with blood pressure lowering drugs.

Rather than targeting the typical rogue proteins associated with dementia, scientists found earlier this month thatfor the very first timethey have reversed dementia in mice with a drug that reduces inflammation.

Up until now, most dementia treatments have targeted the amyloid plaques that are found in people with Alzheimers disease. However, experiments conducted at the University of California, Berkeley suggest targeting inflammation in the brain might stop it in its tracks.

If you didnt already have enough reason to eat your vegetables, this study published back in May says that broccoli contains an amazing ingredient which could be the Achilles heel of cancer.

Broccoli is part of the cruciferous vegetable family, which includes cauliflower, cabbage, kale and Brussels sproutsand though many people dont like their taste, these vegetables contain a tiny, but powerful molecule that deactivates the gene responsible for cancerous tumor growth, known as WWP1.

Millions of blind people could have their vision restored using stem cells taken from the eyes of non-living donors, according to Scottish research publish back in March.

Thanks to the pioneering tissue transplant, eight patients with a common condition that destroys vision had the affected area repairedand two patients were even able to read again after having severe macular degeneration.

Back in April, Canadian researchers developed a new treatment for mobility-impaired Parkinsons disease patientsand the results were beyond their wildest dreams.

Scientists from Western University in Ontario published the results of a pilot study in which they used spinal implants to improve motor function in several patients with advanced Parkinsons.

Prior to the study, the patients were barely able to stand on their own without falling over or they were forced to depend entirely on wheelchairs for mobility. After getting the spinal implant, however, the patients are now capable of walking unassisted for the first time in years.

According to a report from May, people who experience anxiety symptoms might be helped by taking steps to regulate the microorganisms in their gut using probiotic and non-probiotic food and supplements.

Anxiety symptoms are common in people with mental diseases and a variety of physical disorders, especially in disorders that are related to stress. Previous studies have shown that as many as a third of people will be affected by anxiety symptoms during their lifetime.

Increasingly, research has indicated that gut microbiotathe trillions of microorganisms in the gut which perform important functions in the immune system and metabolism by providing essential inflammatory mediators, nutrients and vitaminscan help regulate brain function through something called the gut-brain axis.

In August, researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine may have found the key to restoring hearing in people with irreversible deafness.

Using genetic tools in mice, researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine say they identified a pair of proteins that precisely control when sound-detecting cells, known as hair cells, are born in the mammalian inner ear.

Scientists in our field have long been looking for the molecular signals that trigger the formation of the hair cells that sense and transmit sound, says Dr. Angelika Doetzlhofer, associate professor of neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. These hair cells are a major player in hearing loss, and knowing more about how they develop will help us figure out ways to replace hair cells that are damaged.

As MDMA is now being recognized as a groundbreaking cure for emotional trauma, a new clinic in Pennsylvania could become one of the first legally-sanctioned facilities for using the psychoactive drug on treatment-resistant PTSD in the United States.

Now that it has reportedly opened its doors in Wyndmoore, The Landing medical facility will specialize in using several psychoactive drugs to treat a variety of mental health disorders.

Particularly, it has been pushing to receive FDA approval on using MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for patients whose Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder has been untreatable.

Dental fillings may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to this breakthrough from Chinese scientists.

Enamel is the mineralized substance that protects the surface of teeth. Though it is one of the toughest tissues in our bodies, it is prone to degradation over time particularly as a result of consistent exposure to certain acids that are found in food and drinks.

We currently use resins and ceramics to fill in deteriorated enamel, but these fillings can often become loose within just a few years of their placementand with tooth decay being one of the most prevalent chronic diseases amongst humans, scientists have puzzled over how they can recreate enamel.

Until now, we have not been able to reproduce the toughened tissue because of its complex cellular structurebut back in September, a team of researchers from Zhejiang University School of Medicine developed a gel that makes enamel repair itself.

With pancreatic cancer ranking as one of the most deadly forms of cancer, researchers were excited to report on a promising new breakthrough for a treatment.

Pancreatic cancer, which maintains a 95% mortality rate, is resistant to all current treatments. Patients have extremely poor chances of surviving for five years after being diagnosedand since the disease does not show symptoms until the advanced stages, it is notoriously hard to diagnose.

However, this Tel Aviv University study published earlier this month finds that a small molecule has the ability to induce the self-destruction of pancreatic cancer cells. The research was conducted with xenograftstransplantations of human pancreatic cancer into immunocompromised mice. The treatment reduced the number of cancer cells by 90% in the developed tumors a month after being administered.

Keeping Your Childs Baby Teeth Could Save Their Life In The Future – BabyGaga

Friday, December 13th, 2019

Medical technology now tells us that when kids'baby teeth are kept safe, valuable cells are stored inside that can lead to possibly life-changing research work with stem cells down the road.

Remember when you were a kid and you couldn't wait until that pesky loose tooth finally wiggled itself free so that you could put it under your pillow and wait for a visit from the mysterious Tooth Fairy? A gift in exchange for an old tooth seemed like a pretty sweet deal at age 7 but now, according to medical professionals, those fallen baby teeth are the true gift; worth their weight in stem cell gold.

RELATED: 10 UNPLEASANT TRUTHS ABOUT BABY TEETHING (AND 10 THINGS MOM CAN ACTUALLY DO)

According to Small Joys, baby teeth are made nearly entirely of cells and these dental cells are going to be in big demand in the future. The reason for this is that our bodies are made completely of cells, divided in three categories of functionalities. Dental cells belong into the stem cell category and because these are caught at the early stage of development in your child's life, they just might be able to save your child's life down the road should the occasion ever arise.

For such an amazing task, you might be thinking how much is the storage going to cost at the expensive cryogenic laboratory that you're going to have to find to keep your child's baby teeth at? But no worries there because Small Joys says that according to medical technology professionals, the dental cells are already perfect preserved in their own little chambers. All you need to do is provide them with a nice, dry, safe and clean environment. This can be something as simple as a little BPA-free box with a snap lid.

NEXT:METALS IN BABY TEETH MAY HELP REVEAL THE CAUSES OF AUTISM, ADHD, STUDY SAYS

Be sure to mark the outside with the contents such as your child's complete name, the date they lost their tooth, the age they lost the tooth at, and maybe even the location of the tooth if you can. You can easily find a dental chart online. If you're feeling fancy, there are even some little cases made just for the occasion that comes with spaces for each tooth! Can't go wrong there.

In the end, hanging on to baby teeth is important to help doctors and scientists help make great strides in the world of stem cell research and breakthroughs with major diseases. Plus you've got to admit that it's also kind of cute to save for the memories, too!

The Third Generation of PRP Is Here – Jewish Link of New Jersey

Wednesday, November 13th, 2019

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is part of a revolution in medicine. PRP contains an abundance of growth factors that play a valuable role in healing many ailments. The PRP technology has been developing for the benefit of patients, resulting in improved outcome and great results.

Platelet-rich plasma has evolved over the past 15 years from an experimental treatment and an idea that concentrated platelets can heal injuries to an everyday treatment that benefits so many. Platelets are concentrated by taking your blood in a tube or syringe and spinning the blood in a high-speed centrifuge that causes the components of blood to separate, including the red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The first generation of platelets involved one or two spins to separate the platelets, often including an anticoagulant to prevent clotting and solidifying of the platelets so it can be spread as a liquid around the target. This PRP has been effective for a range of musculoskeletal conditions. The second generation of PRP involves formation of a platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM) that is valuable as a gel that can be applied to wounds, surgical sites and for dental conditions.

The third generation of PRP, also called CGF or concentrated growth factors,

was first developed and described in 2006 by an Italian physician (Dr. Sacco) and has recently become widely available in the United States with the Medifuge centrifuge. With a single spin, the blood is spun at multiple speeds, which concentrates the platelets while also isolating cells that express CD34+. This is a type of stem cell that greatly enhances the effectiveness of the platelets. The other advantage of this third-generation PRP is that without anticoagulants the platelets can be applied quickly as a liquid to apply to injured tendons and ligaments or for cosmetic benefit. By waiting a few minutes the platelets solidify, which is great for applying to wounds. Even when applied as a liquid, the third generation platelets solidify soon after injected, which helps attach the platelets to the area injected. This allows the platelets to provide growth factors for a longer duration to increase effectiveness.

There are many applications for this advanced PRP. Ligament and tendon injuries respond very well to PRP. These injuries often do not heal spontaneously because the ligaments and tendons do not get good blood flow. With PRP and its accompanying growth factors, the tendon and ligament is able to finally heal, providing long-term relief. In contrast to a steroid injection, which provides short-term relief and may contribute to tissue degeneration, PRP helps build and strengthen tissue and provides long-term relief.

To clarify, tennis elbow, golfers elbow, rotator cuff tendonitis, wrist tendonitis, iliotibial band syndrome, Osgood-Schlatters and Achilles tendonitis are all examples of tendon injuries characterized by weakening of the tendon fibers or even partial tears. PRP strengthen the tendon and heals all of these conditions.

Ligament injuries include all joint sprains and strains such as ankle sprains, shoulder strains, etc. The hallmark of joint arthritis is weakening of the ligaments that leads to wear and tear of the joint, with a cascade of cartilage erosion that leads to bone spurs, then joint space narrowing and eventually bone on bone. Any time you see a bone spur, chances are that there is a loose ligament that created the conditions that led to that spur. Platelets heal the ligaments so that the joint is more stable and the arthritic pain is relieved and recurrent ankle sprains stop recurring.

Thus, PRP is very effective for arthritic joints, including knee arthritis, hip arthritis and shoulder arthritis among others. The PRP is effective at strengthening the joint capsule that is comprised of ligaments and can provide support for the joint cartilage. Even with severe bone-on-bone arthritis, PRP can help strengthen the ligaments around the joint, which helps reduce pain.

PRP can also help you improve your appearance. With the vampire facial you get the benefit of the healing growth factors, which lead to increased collagen and blood flow for skin rejuvenation. The great aspect of this treatment is that this is a very natural way to naturally enhance your skin. Without undergoing surgery you can achieve a youthful appearance. So while stars such as Bar Rafaeli and Kim Kardashian have used platelets to enhance their appearance, the vampire facial is accessible to you and will give your skin a healthy, revitalized feeling. Everyone has an inner beauty. PRP helps your outer beauty so it is in sync with your inner beauty.

There are other cosmetic benefits to platelets. The growth factors that the platelets release can heal scars. This includes unsightly scars after a surgery or a laceration. Growing collagen within the scar will usually improve its appearance. Acne scars, which are tiny holes along the skin surface, are filled in with platelets. Burn scars may not be totally eliminated with PRP, but the growth factors can have dramatic effects on the appearance of these scars.

Another cosmetic benefit of PRP is hair growth. PRP leads to increased hair follicle formation increasing the hair density. While not practical for total hair loss, PRP is excellent for treating thinning hair in men and women. The best part is that you are stimulating the follicle growth with your own platelets without the use of medications or other invasive procedures. So if you run your hand through your hair and you feel it is thinner than you would like, PRP may be for you.

PRP is abundant, safe and the worlds most sophisticated repair system. Nothing else comes close to its amazing properties. PRP is a powerful source of growth factors. Whats best is that it comes from your own body so you are healing your own body with your own platelets. Whether you have an injury that needs the healing benefit of platelets, or if you want to enhance your appearance, promote hair growth or improve a scar, or for other challenges that can be enhanced with platelets, you should consider PRP to improve your quality of life. The success of PRP has been enhanced with the new technology of third-generation PRP. The concentrated growth factors (CGF) optimize platelets that are enhanced by stem cells for maximal benefit.

Why you need to brush and floss your kid’s teeth until he’s 6 – INQUIRER.net

Wednesday, November 6th, 2019

While the spotlight has lately been on dengue, polio and other virus-borne diseases, the most widespread illness in childrenfive times more prevalent than asthmacontinues to affect many kids. Im talking about early tooth decay.

Cavities? No big deal, kids get them, their baby teeth will fall out anyway, right?

No, its a disease. Cavities are triggered by bacteria that use sugar to make acids that damage teeth. It erodes the structure of teeth by draining off the calcium. Even without causing pain, decaying baby teeth could mean rotten permanent teeth.

When permanent teeth come into an environment where the baby teeth have already decayed, the same bacteria will attack the new teeth, said Burton Edelstein, DDS, MPH, professor of dentistry and health policy at Columbia University.

There are more cases of early tooth decay partly because kids are eating more processed food like pretzels, crackers, sweets, juice and soda than before. Gummy candy/vitamins are also to blame.

Kids need their parents to brush and floss their teeth for them until theyre 6 because they cant do it well yet. They tend to brush the same teeth in the front over and over again, but dont get to the back teeth or the inside surfaces, said Paul Casamassimo, DDS, chief of dentistry at Nationwide Childrens Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Mary Lynn R. Abellera, DMD, pediatric dentist at Dental Nook Santana Grove Sucat, is more conservative: Usually at 8-9 years old they have already developed the dexterity to brush their own teeth. Thats right along the time when theyre adept enough to tie their own shoes.

I let my feisty 4-year-old daughter brush her teeth by herself, but I follow up with an inspection, going over it again. We then add a tongue scraping to get rid of bad breath-causing gunk.

Its a great time to also introduce flossing, as its the only way to reach the cavity-causing plaque between teeth and below the gums.

Loose tooth

What to do when a child starts having a loose tooth? Parents should condition the child that they will lose a tooth because theres a new one coming out. Encourage the child to use the tooth in biting and brush it properly so it will wiggle more, said Abellera.

Tempting as it may be, dont yank it out. Said Grace Yum, DDS, a pediatric dentist at Childrens Memorial Hospital Chicago: Its better to let it come off on its own. Removing it early can be painful and may cause gum infection. Most kids are fascinated with wiggling a loose tooth and thats okay, but be certain her hands are clean.

What about when a child complains of pain during tooth development? Generally, an erupting tooth does not cause pain, but if it does, see a dentist. In the meantime, its safe to give paracetamol, advised Abellera.

With new permanent teeth in place, how else can we take better care of them? Ask your dentist to apply dental sealants, plastic coatings that can lower the chances of decay by about 89 percent.

Molar erosion

My 8-year-old son grinds his teeth in his sleep. This has led to the erosion of his molars, which makes biting painful. Since my son is too young to be fitted for a mouth guard, his bite is raised by applying a composite (pasta or filling) on the applicable surfaces every few months, depending on the severity of the erosion.

Night grinding or bruxism is an unconscious habit. It is a sleep-related movement disorder. There is still no concrete cause but its usually a combination of psychological, genetic and physical factors, explained Abellera. Sometimes thats how the child releases stress. Some grinders dont need treatment, but they can wear night guards to protect their teeth.

For parents who can afford it, cord blood banking is considered for its stem cell possibilities.

What about tooth banking?

Said Abellera: Tooth banking is saving or storing baby teeth, wisdom teeth or healthy extracted teeth for regenerative medicine. The dentist will extract the tooth at a certain time to preserve the vitality of the pulp, then it will be stored properly and be collected by the tooth bank. Like insurance, theres an annual cost for storage.

Teeth are an excellent source of stem cells, the dental pulp, especially if its a young permanent tooth. Since regenerative therapies are on the rise, tooth banking is gaining popularity. However, its still not prominent in the Philippines. Usually its used only for autogenous grafting for dental implants, not for regenerative therapies.

Looks like the tooth fairy is still in business. CONTRIBUTED

Dental Stem Cells and Tooth Regeneration In 2019 celldent

Saturday, September 14th, 2019

Teeth are the foremost natural, noninvasive source of stem cells. Dental stem cells, that are straightforward, convenient, and reasonable to gather, hold promise for a variety of very potential therapeutic applications. Dental stem cells provide an awfully promising therapeutic approach to restoring structural defects and this idea is extensively explored by many researchers that are obvious by the speedily growing literature in this field.

Dental problems caused by dental caries, periodontal disease and tooth injury compromise the oral and general health issues. Current advances in the development of regenerative therapy have been influenced by our understanding ofembryonic development, stem cell biology, and tissue engineering technology.Tooth regenerationis a field of regenerative medicine procedure within the field of tissue engineering and stem cell biology to exchange damaged or lost teeth by re-growing them from autologous stem cells.

Dental Stem Cell Therapy with Dr. Jasmine Naderi, DDS

Monday, May 13th, 2019

For the last decade now we have been promised the advent of dental stem cell therapy to help regrow our missing teeth. With the growth and expansion of newer technologies like dental implants, and advances in root canal therapy, the talk of stem cells has subtly taken a back seat. The question remains: how far away are we from stem cells actually impacting the dental market?

Sungtao Shi, professor and chairman at the University of Pennsylvania department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, is at the forefront of this research and he is showing how close we may actually be to this new form of treatment.

Professor Shi has been working for the past ten years testing the possibilities of dental stem cells after discovering them in his own childs baby tooth. His team has learned more about how these dental stem cells work, and how they could be safely be used to regrow dental tissue, known as pulp (this is the tissue that we see within our teeth).

Dental Stem Cell Therapy

Shi along with David Mooney (Professor of Bioengineering at Harvard University) are making claims that these stem cells can be directly placed within our dental pulp to help regrow parts of a tooth that have been damaged by decay.

Several other researchers have also chimed in getting similar results in their own laboratories. Paul Sharpe, a leading bioengineer at Kings County London, has noted that his lab findings indicate mobilizing dental stem cells into our own pulp helps regrow lost dentin. He claims that the new dentin that is formed completely fuses with our own healthy dentin.

Sharpe has also add that this form of tissue engineering could be the first real advance in dental pharmaceuticals, and that we could see this on the market very soon.

The question that this form of therapy poses is this: how much of these stem cells need to be synthesized and given to each individual? The amount will be critical as too much may lead to serious side effects in people. Clinical trials will need to be conducted to see what amount of the agent is safe.

Sharpe is now investigating larger groups of potential agents to determine which stem cell therapy works best for decaying teeth and also working on the optimal dose.

Sharpes team is also working on a new delivery system, which is more practical to modern dental clinics: The chosen agent of stem cells will be dissolved in gel-form, and is injected directly into a cavity and bathed with ultraviolet light until it has solidified. This is a quick and easy procedure for any trained dentist.

Dental Stem Cells

The hope is to properly introduce newer stem cell treatments into modern dentistry, although, researchers still need to perform clinical trials with human patients for efficacy and safety standards.

Some of the dental stem cell treatments are currently being considered to be approved for other uses in humans, which he hopes will expedite the process for eventual FDA approval. A lot of dental treatments are still in the dark ages, Sharpe says. Its time to move forward.

We find ourselves in a revolutionary time in the field of dentistry. Over the next decade we will hopefully see newer agents like these enter the market and make a significant impact on our communities. This new stem cell technology will hopefully also reduce the sky-rocketing prices of certain other dental procedures.

Ultimately, we will have to wait and see how quickly clinical trials move forward, and how efficacious these agents are on a mass scale.

Did you know theres a new typeofdentalfilling that actually triggers your teeth to repair and regenerate themselves? Its true. Researchers from Harvard University and the University of Nottingham recently developed a procedureknown asstem cell fillings. In essence, its aregenerative dental filling that prompts the stem cells inside a personsown tooth to heal itself. This is a revolutionary dental health discovery thatcould make the dreaded root canal a dental procedureof the past.

Its a very common belief that existing tooth decay andcavities cannot be reversed, but thats never actually been true. The practice of drilling a tooth and fillingit with a synthetic material is not the only or thebest way to address cavities. Similarly, a root canal is not necessarily a must; there are natural ways to avoid this intense dental procedure.

One of the newest and best ways might just be stem cell fillings. This new approach couldimpact the lives of millions of dental patients and heal teeth when they are injured from dental disease or dental surgery, two very common health concerns.

Adam Celiz, PhD, research fellow at the University of Nottingham, explains:

Existing dental fillings are toxic to cells and are therefore incompatible with pulp tissue inside the tooth. We have designed synthetic biomaterials that can be used similarly to dental fillings but can be placed in direct contact with pulp tissue to stimulate the native stem cell population for repair and regeneration of pulp tissue and the surrounding dentin. (1)

In short, the biomaterial filling would allow the tooth to heal itself.

Typically, the pulp of the tooth and the nerve are removed during a root canal. I know, it doesnt sound too enjoyable. And unfortunately, it can often be quite painful. The good news is that if stem cell fillings become the norm, then fillings made of synthetic biomaterials would be inserted that stimulate dental stem cells to repair and regenerate dentin. Dentin is the bony tissue that forms the majorityof the tooth under the enamel.

The researchers believe that if stem cell fillings are used in a damaged tooth, then the tooths own stem cells willrepair the disease and damage that typically requires a root canal by todays common dental standards. This could also help dental patients avoid other dangerous chemicals typically found in composite dental fillings and sealants. BPAand related estrogenicchemicals often used in fillings can break down in the mouth, exposing patients to hormone-disrupting chemicals and even the carcinogen formaldehyde. (2)

By reversingcavities naturally, youre not only avoiding fillings, you can also avoid root canals. The common reasons that you might need a root canal include having a deep cavity, having acracked tooth, repeated dental treatment to the tooth or trauma. Want to avoidthe need for a painful root canal? Then you must eliminate tooth decay through good nutrition and proper oral hygiene.

While it may take some time for the stem cell fillings technology to hit your dentists office, there are things you can do now toavoid root canals and cavities.

Stem cells are defined as cells that have the ability to divide and develop into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth. Stem cells canalso help repair the body, or in this case a dental disease or injury, by dividing to replenish cells that are damaged by disease, injury, or normal wear. (4)

The research is looking very promising for the use of tooth stem cells in dental patients. So promising in fact that itearned second place in the materials category at the Royal Society of Chemistrys Emerging Technologies Competition 2016.

Hopefully, this type of treatment might be an optionto the public in the very near future. Imaginebeing able to regenerate components of your own teeth. Were potentially looking at a much brighter future of dentistry where damaged teeth could actually heal themselves, lower filling failure rates andthe need for mostroot canals could even be eliminated all together.
