What Does It Mean When Athletes Get 'Stem Cell Therapy'?

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

Media cheerleading is misleadingly legitimizing the booming "stem cell tourism" industry.

Peyton Manning [JohnGress/Reuters]

One could argue that stem cell research is currently the most promising area of biomedical research. It is no surprise that this year'sNobel Prize in Medicinewent to a duo that work in the area. But much of the press coverage associated with the field falls squarely in the too-good-to-be true category. It is this sort of unsubstantiated hype that contributes to inappropriate public expectations and the legitimization of bogus therapies.

A new and troubling dimension to the hype has emerged: the well-publicized use of "stem cell therapies" by high-profile athletes.

The phenomenon has been around for a few years. The first big stem-cells-help-athlete story seems to have been the 2011 story of New York Yankee pitcher, Bartolo Colon. He received cell therapy for a chronic shoulder injury. Then, also in 2011, came the story about Peyton Manning's neck treatments in Germany. There here have since been dozens of similar articles. Google "NFL and stem cell therapy" and what you get is a bunch of stories about football players receiving allegedly cutting-edge cell treatments from practitioners throughout the world.

While some of these stories note the experimental and possibly harmful nature of the treatments, most of the articles cast the treatments in a positive light.

The implied take away: this stuff works. If Peyton Manning is using stem cells, it must be the real deal! It has even been suggested that stem cell therapies are so powerful that they might end up being a new, undetectable, performance enhancement technology.

But a more dispassionate examination of the available scientific data paints a much different picture. There are, in fact, few stem cell therapies that are ready for the clinic. These are, in general, truly experimental procedures and it remains unclear if they can actually help injured athletes. As noted in one recently published review of the use of stem cells for knee injuries, "[m]ost reports represent animal model studies; few advances have been translated to human clinical applications."

In fact, it is an open question in the research community whether this work should truly be considered "stem cell" therapy. As noted by colleague Mick Bhatia, Director and Senior Scientist McMaster Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute, "these injury therapies lack any evidence to indicate 'stem cells' by any definition or means are being used. Any therapeutic effects noted are most likely from any cell type being injected, including cell lines, that would cause local anti-inflammatory response that is both transient (days) and does not involve any stem cell biology." His blunt conclusion: "Lots of stem cell conclusions here are bogus all the way around ... The treatment fetches a lot of money by claiming a stem cell therapy is being used."

Despite this clinical reality, a recent analysis I did with a colleague found that much of the media coverage(72.7 percent)doesn't even touch on efficacy issues. In fact, many of the stories(42 percent)specifically refer to alleged benefits, and only a few (5.7 percent) mention possible risks or safety issues. The overall vibe from the sports-oriented media is even more promotional in tone. For example, the author of an editorial on a popular sports news website states that he has observed a number of athletes get "stem cell treatments and universally each one improved dramatically."

ECONOMY: Scottish First Minister tries to lure California businesses overseas

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond is in California this week, knocking on the doors of disgruntled CEOS tired of high taxes, trying to lure them to expand research and manufacturing facilities to Scotland.

Top on the list of targets are businesses in the life sciences industry ---- which is a strong sector in San Diego County that has seen rapid growth and attracted millions of dollars in investment locally.

However, one of the first big deals to emerge from Salmond's visit may come in the renewable energy field ---- another strong area in San Diego County ---- following a meeting between Salmond and California Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday.

In a phone interview Wednesday, Salmond said that he and Brown agreed to have their staff look into drafting a memorandum of understanding that addresses how their two governments could share ---- or pursue ---- renewable energy research or manufacturing. One of the first avenues to pursue may be to form joint research work at the university level, Salmond said.

"Yes, we think the relations between Scotland and California could be a flourishing one," Salmond said. "We've set up a working party to look at potential cooperation in renewable energies."

The life sciences field is another area of interest to Salmond in Scotland, which gained international fame with the cloning of "Dolly" the sheep in the 1990s.

Dolly was the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell by scientists at the Roslin Institute and the biotechnology company PPL Therapeutics, located near Edinburgh in Scotland.

Public relations statements distributed before Salmond's visit this week indicate that Scotland is ranked No. 1 in the world for stem-cell research, which is yet another field that San Diego County has gained high marks globally.

Of interest to Salmond is Carlsbad-based Life Technologies Corp., a biotechnology and medical instrumentation company that employs about 370 workers at a manufacturing and distribution facility in Paisley, located in the west central Lowlands area of Scotland.

"We have not made any further announcements in reference to what our plans are there," said Patty Zamora, a spokeswoman with Life Technologies.

Long-term pesticide exposure is harmful: STM study

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

Calcutta News.net Wednesday 20th June, 2012

Long-time exposure to pesticides via inhalation may cause moderate to severe blood toxicity and reduction in the total number of bone marrow cells, leading to several degenerative diseases like aplastic anaemia, researchers at the School of Tropical Medicine (STM) here say.

The researches arrived at the conclusion from procedures performed on mice.

"As a whole, exposure to pesticides reduced the total number of bone marrow cells or, in other words, suppressed them," Sujata Law, assistant professor (Stem Cell Biology) at STM's Department of Medical Biotechnology, told IANS.

Bone marrow is the soft, flexible tissue found in long bones such as the thigh bone and the hip bone that contain immature cells called stem cells.

Stem cells, particularly the haematopoeitic stem cells (HSC) or the blood-forming stem cells can develop into the following types - red blood cells that carry oxygen, white blood cells that fight infection and platelets that help to clot blood.

So, in effect, bone marrow is the birthplace of these important cells.

"Bone marrow suppression leads to a number of degenerative diseases like aplastic anaemia, where the deficiency in the number of cells in the circulating blood (peripheral cytopenia) is the main feature," Law said.

The exact underlying mechanism is unknown but it has been concluded from the research published in the Journal of Environmental Toxicology that the microenvironment of the stem cells, in which they develop, is somehow deranged and this prevents their development into the various types of cells.

"In order to prevent degenerative diseases related to pesticide exposure, it is of prime importance that those handling pesticides take precautions like wearing protective clothing, including masks and gloves," she said.

Omani scientists collect semen of Arabian tahr for future research

(Our Correspondent) / 22 May 2012

MUSCAT - Scientists in Oman have reported a significant breakthrough in research in the offsite conservation of rare wild animals.

Biotechnologists in the Department of Biology at the College of Science, Sultan Qaboos University, said they had successfully collected semen of the Arabian tahr or ibex (locally called Waal Al Arabi or Arabitragus jayakari), an endangered species indigenous to Oman and the UAE, and successfully frozen it for later use in reproductive biology.

Dr Senan Baqir, who is leading the research, underlined that this was the first ever project to investigate the fertility of the male ibex. He added that the high viability of the collected and frozen semen could be used in reproductive biotechnologies such as artificial insemination and embryo transfer.

This, in turn, could lead to a rapid increase in the numbers of the Arabian Waal and to eventually remove it from the red list of endangered animals prepared by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), he added.

Baqir said that the project could be expanded to other endangered wild animal species of Oman such as the Nimir Al Arabi, Caracal, sand fox and the Arabian wolf, also expressing hope that the frozen samples could be the beginning of the establishment of a gamete bank or cell bank in future.

The proposed cell bank, if coupled with other innovative technological approaches such as assisted reproductive biotechnologies, interspecies transplantation, reproductive cloning, semen sexing, stem cell lines, ovum pick-up (OPU) and in vitro fertilisation, would be appropriate tools to combat the continued population decline of endangered species in Oman, he added.

Dr Khalid Al Rasbi, from the Veterinary Services Division of the Royal Court Affairs, noted that the number of endangered animals in Oman was on a declining path despite the huge effort and investment made by the government.

He attributed this to conditions that go beyond government control such as cyclones, pollution, extreme hot weather, drought, smuggling and illegal trade, growth of wild life tourism, rapid urbanisation and construction and pollution and diseases.

GUEST OPINION: We must promote regenerative research to save lives

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

By Ellen Cogen Lipton

We must continue the fight for regenerative medical research

Regenerative medical research is about hope and potential. It holds the promise for life-saving cures and treatments and could revolutionize medical treatment for hundreds of thousands of people throughout Michigan who are battling debilitating diseases such as Parkinson's and juvenile diabetes. Yet, less than four years after Michigan voters approved such research, factions are continuing to try to thwart this industry that could save and extend countless lives while boosting Michigan's economy.

Michigan voters spoke loud and clear that they support regenerative medical research in 2008 when they approved Proposal 2, which gave families the option to donate for medical research unsuitable or leftover embryos from fertility treatments that would otherwise be unavailable for research.

Last year, we saw just how low opponents of regenerative medical research will go to overturn the will of the people. An amendment was added to a Higher Education Appropriations bill that attempted to prevent life-saving research and derail the industry from taking hold in Michigan. While we defeated this ploy, it should serve as a rallying cry that our work to this important research is far from over.

That's why I'm committed to doing everything I can to keep this research growing in Michigan. Opponents are working against this development at a time when this industry is just beginning to gain momentum.

With our top-notch educational and research facilities, Michigan - Southeast Michigan in particular - is poised to become the epicenter of the emerging life sciences industry, attracting high-tech job providers from around the world. Building on our University Research Corridor and Oakland County's Medical Main Street, we have a great foundation to advance this industry and benefit from thousands of good-paying jobs and millions in investment.

The passage of Proposal 2 and our hosting of the prestigious World Stem Cell Summit sent the message around the world that Michigan is serious about regenerative medical research and is a great place for businesses to locate and grow. Crain's Detroit Business recently listed increasing medical tourism, creating a bio-pharmaceutical research and development hub, and becoming a center for research and medical facilities as one of the six areas Michigan must strengthen.

We have the opportunity to help make great strides in medicine while also creating good-paying jobs. We must stay focused on expanding Michigan's footprint in this growing industry. Together, we can provide hope and progress to hundreds of thousands of Michigan residents and people around the globe whose lives could be improved and potentially saved. To me, that's worth fighting for.

State Representative Ellen Cogen Lipton represents the 27th District (Berkley, Ferndale, Hazel Park, Huntington Woods and part of Oak Park.)
