Rahman's parent's noticed that he was having trouble keeping up with other children and was starting to miss developmental milestones when he was about 4 years old. After a muscle biopsy they determined that he had a neuromuscular disorder that is consistent with muscular dystrophy, although his doctors were never able to determine the exact cause of the condition. The progression of the illness was slow and Rahman was able to have a normal childhood, though his muscle mass continued to slowly atrophy. It has only been in the past 4 to 5 years that the progression of the disease has accelerated and Rahman has seen an impact in his quality of life. Because of this he began to look into new treatment options including stem cells. As a PhD law student, he took his research seriously and explored all the different alternatives. He explains, "I looked at Germany, Mexico, India and China. Weighing the cost and benefits, such as cost and safety. A whole litany of things. In China they use traditional medicine ...

Linsanity Takes White Plains; The Twilight of Jim Calhoun

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Today in sports: The Knicks guard is moving to Westchester, despite our warnings, health problems and the always capricious NCAA have this looking like the final spring for one of college basketball's greatest coaches, and Kobe Bryant may not have to pay that $75 million divorce settlement after all.

RELATED: A Slightly Cheaper Super Bowl Ticket; Possible New Teams for Peyton Manning

New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin has reportedly ignored our advice and reached a deal to sublet a two-bedroom apartment in the Trump Tower in White Plains. We still say he should have stayed in the city, but the New York Daily News points out the building is "home to several other Knicks players and some New York Rangers as well," so he won't get  too lonely. Lin is now the third Knick to occupy this particular apartment. Much beloved former Knicks forward David Lee -- now a member of the Golden State Warriors -- owns it, and center Amar'e Stoudemire briefly rented it from him during last year's NBA lockout, before coming to the not-unreasonable conclusion it was inefficient to have an apartment in White Plains and a $37,500-a-month penthouse in the city. New York real estate mavens estimate the apartment will cost Lin $3,800 a month, about $800 less than his 8th grade yearbook was being offered for on eBay. [New York Daily News]

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, who last month agreed to give his wife Vanessa $75 million and three houses as part of a divorce settlement, kissed his future-former-ex at halftime of last night's game against Atlanta. Sources say they're working to repair the relationship. For Kobe, the timing is just great, since the split still needs to be finalized. [TMZ]

University of Connecticut men's basketball coach Jim Calhoun has won three national titles and beaten cancer three times. But it's looking increasingly unlikely that he's going to return to the sideline again. And really, who can blame him? Earlier this month he took a leave of absence from the team to deal with a spinal conditional called spinal stenosis, that makes both walking and sitting incredibly painful. And last week, the NCAA announced it had denied UConn's request for a waiver that would allow the school to play in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The school was in violation of a new, vaguely-crooked, very NCAA attempt to raise graduation rates. Per the new rule, "a school must have a two-year average score of 930 or a four-year average of 900 on the NCAA's annual Academic Progress Rate, which measures the academic performance of student athletes." UConn's four-year APR rate was 888.5, With the 2013 ban in place, players are expected to leave for the NBA draft or transfer to other schools in droves, since they won't have to sit out the usual year in-between. That would crater the program's talent base, of course, but University president Susan Herbst -- a supporter of Calhoun's -- seemed to acknowledge the possibility of it happening today, telling USA Today, "I hope they stay, but I don't want to hurt these guys." Calhoun's contract is up in 2014, but the prospect of rebuilding completely from scratch might not be the kind of uphill fight Jim Calhoun--patron saint of college basketball uphill fights -- would enjoy. Monday Night Football will be switching to a two-person booth next season and the odd man out is former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski. The pairing of Jaworski and former Oakland Raiders coach Jon Gruden was chaotic, save for the late-game moments where they forget to feign enthusiasm and started giving honest and biting evaluations of what they were seeing. Current play-by-play man Mike Tirico will be back alongside Gruden, which is fantastic if you like  play-by-play broadcasters who will always tell you when the wind knocks a football off a kicking tee, but go entire drives without mentioning the score. When it comes to the number of weird, faintly dangerous-seeming neck operations Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has undergone, the accepted number has always been three. Turns out, he may have had four. It's unclear when the fourth procedure happened, though Sports Illustrated's Don Banks places it sometime in a 14 week window last summer. This fourth surgery could explain why Manning is struggling with throws to his left, as well as one made straight and directly in front of his face. front of his face. [Sports Illustrated]

Colorado panel tasked with weighing eco-devo projects, doling out incentives

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Dick Monfort. (Karl Gehring | The Denver Post)

Over the next few months, nine men will decide which projects get funding under a state law created in 2009 to bring new visitors to Colorado.

They are the members of the Colorado Economic Development Commission, which approves loans and grants from the state's economic-development fund to help businesses expand and to attract new companies to Colorado.

Now they are responsible for determining which two projects, if any, are eligible to receive up to a combined $50 million a year in state sales-tax rebates.

Five commission members are appointed by the governor, two by the president of the Senate and two by the speaker of the House. They come from across the state and represent a variety of industries, including banking, real estate and law.

"The commission has good representation statewide," said member Dwayne Romero. "It's not just a Denver-centric composition. That's going to give a broader perspective and will help to enliven the conversation and discussion that will occur leading up to the recommendations."

The applicants for the incentives include Aurora, for a proposed 1,500-room hotel and conference center; Douglas County, for a prehistoric-archaeology museum and sports complex; Glendale, for an outdoor riverwalk entertainment complex; Pueblo, for a downtown riverwalk area that would include a bull-riding training center and an expanded convention center; Estes Park, to redevelop and renovate Elkhorn Lodge and build a 50-acre, year-round adventure park; and Montrose County, which is proposing 141 tourism and commercial projects.

Here's who will decide which projects, if any, receive the Regional Tourism Act incentives:

Dick Monfort - Chairman

Since Monfort took control of the Colorado Rockies in 2005, the ballclub's attendance has increased 50 percent and revenue has risen every year. Before taking over the Rockies, the Greeley businessman spent 25 years in the cattle business.

Monfort also owns the Hyatt Grand Champions Hotel in Palm Springs, Calif., and Hilltop Steak House in Boston. He helped launch the Montera Cattle Co. in 1996 and, a year later, the first Brett Favre Steak House in Milwaukee.

Don Elliman

Colorado's former economic-development chief is now executive director of the Charles C. Gates Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Biology. Now, he'll also serve as interim chancellor of the University of Colorado Denver and Anschutz Medical Campus.

Elliman's career has covered a broad spectrum. He was publisher of Sports Illustrated and People, president of Kroenke Sports Enterprises and chairman of the board of Children's Hospital Colorado.

Howard Gelt

As an attorney with Polsinelli Shugart specializing in commercial real estate, Gelt represents landlords and tenants in lease transactions, property management, listing agreements and tenant-improvement contracts.

Gelt serves on the boards of the Metropolitan Denver Economic Development Corp., the North Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce, Coloradans for Smart Transit and the Morgan's Subdivision Historic District Association.

Dick Robinson

Robinson and his brother Eddie formed Robinson Dairy in 1975, when they bought the assets of Roberts Dairy. They sold the company to Dean Foods in 1999 but still serve as co-chief executives.

A fourth-generation Denver native, Dick Robinson was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served on active duty in the field artillery for two years. He serves on the boards of the Denver Art Museum, HCA-HealthONE and Regis University.

Wellington Webb

Webb served three terms as Denver's mayor from 1991 to 2003.

During his tenure, Denver International Airport opened; people began moving back to downtown Denver; and the Central Platte Valley was redeveloped, with Coors Field, the Pepsi Center, Elitch Gardens and a new Broncos stadium. He also persuaded voters to approve a $300 million expansion to the Colorado Convention Center, which opened in December 2004, and led tough, successful negotiations for a nearby hotel.

He founded Webb Group International in October 2003 .

Dwayne Romero

Romero, a Snowmass real estate developer, served a brief stint as executive director of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade.

He is president of Related Snowmass, a division of New York development and investment firm Related Cos., and manages a portfolio of commercial and lodging properties in Snowmass Village.

He is on the boards of the Aspen Historical Society and the Aspen Rotary Club.

Bill Sisson

A Grand Junction resident, Sisson retired at the end of 2009 from his position as senior regional president at American National Bank and director of Sturm Financial Group.

After serving in the U.S. Army, Sisson graduated with a finance degree from the University of Denver. Sisson is former chairman of the state Economic Development Commission and a member of the Government Affairs Committee of the Colorado Bankers Association.

Darius Allen

Allen was appointed to the Economic Development Commission last year, the first person from southern Colorado to serve on the panel since 2003. Allen has served four terms as a county commissioner, ranches and owns an insurance company.

J.J. Ament

Investment banker Ament gave up his post at Citigroup in 2009 for an unsuccessful run at the Republican nomination for state treasurer.

Born and raised on his family's ranch in Logan County, one of Ament's first jobs was representing farmers as executive director of the Colorado Association of Wheat Growers.

The Littleton resident currently is director of public finance at RBC Capital Markets.

Josh Hamilton Relapses; The Surprisingly Busy State of the NFL

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

Today in sports: The Wall Street Journal knows what the Patriots and Giants did last summer, the NFL is adding more Thursday night games, and Peyton Manning's doctor clears him to resume playing.

RELATED: Penn State's Recruiting Blues; Peyton Manning's Arm Reportedly Hasn't Healed

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell gave his annual "state of the league" address on Friday. Such speeches are usually perfunctory and kind of boring, but this one was full of actual news: Goodell's biggest revelation was that the league-owned NFL Network will air 13 games on Thursday night next season, up from eight this year. (Time Warner Cable subscribers, feel free to begin mumbling obscenities.) He also walked back comments he made to Bob Costas last night about the possibility of giving Los Angeles an expansion franchise, declaring -- somewhat unconvincingly -- "We want to keep our teams where they are." He wants to play an exhibition game in Mexico, and mustered a defense of the much-maligned London game, which he insists is part of a well-planned "global strategy," rather than an ingenious plot to inconvenience teams and turn the English off the idea of American football forever. [NFL.com]

Speaking of the London game: Wembley Stadium has halted ticket sales for the scheduled October game between the New England Patriots and St. Louis Rams, since the city of St. Louis is continuing to insist the Rams would be in violation of their lease if they played a "home" game anywhere but the Edward Jones Dome. The NFL UK Web site -- which is fantastic -- posted a statement insisting that the delay was would enable the league and St. Louis to "finalise the technical amendments to the lease required under the terms of the Rams' commitment to London," but Goodell seemed less optimistic. "We're going to play the London games," he said. 'We hope it will be with the Rams and Patriots next year."  [Sky Sports]

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski killed any remaining will-he-or-won't-he-play Super Bowl drama when he forgot to wear his protective boot to media day. Now Patriots team sources are quietly saying, yes, the guy everyone expected to play will in fact play. [ESPN.com]

RELATED: Just How Great Was the Djokovic-Nadal Match?; A Super Bowl Box Pool Primer

The Wall Street Journal attributes the success of the Giants and Patriots this year to the way their respective front office staffs handled those first two weeks in July after the NFL lockout ended. The basic premise is that clubs with a disciplined approach to free agency are more consistently competitive than their free-spending rivals, but it's striking to learn how unprepared the majority of teams -- particularly the Philadelphia Eagles -- were to condense an offseason worth of roster moves into the space of several weeks last summer. New England and New York didn't make any earth-shattering football decisions during those two weeks: They just knew how to manage the workflow. [The Wall Street Journal]

ESPN reported last night that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has been "medically cleared by two doctors" to resume football activities, which was news to Colts owner Jim Irsay, who went on Twitter at 1:25 a.m. to inform the world that Manning "has not passed our physical nor has he been cleared to play for The Indianapolis Colts." What makes this all fantastically silly is that, according to the ESPN report, Colts neurosurgeon Dr. Hank Feuer was one of the two doctors who gave the quarterback a clean bill of health. But while a spokesman for Manning's surgeon issued a statement confirming that he'd cleared Manning, Feuer's diagnosis, according to a source who by process of elimination is either Manning or his agent Tom Condon, consisted of telling the quarterback during a recent meeting, "If you were my own son, I'd tell [you] to go play." That doesn't amount to "official" medical clearance (we don't think), but it's an effective way of putting Irsay on notice that the detente they agreed to last Friday is already over. [ESPN]

A British lady named Louise Neathway was arrested in New York City and booked on charges that she harassed and tried to extort cash from Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, who she say she had an affair with. According to a police source, Neathway -- who "also goes by the name Louise Meanwell," per the Daily News -- was arrested in Tribeca Wednesday afternoon after the diminutive general manager helped "lure [her] into a police dragnet." [New York Daily News]

Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton, who lost the first eight years of his career to alcohol and cocaine, fell off the wagon for the second time in three years earlier this week at a Dallas-area bar, downing -- by his count -- three of four drinks. For Hamilton, the timing couldn't have been worse -- he's entering the final year of his contract and is reportedly seeking a six-year extension worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $120 million. Nobody knows how this impacts the team's thinking, but it's worth noting that Hamilton was not joined by general manager Jon Daniels, club president Nolan Ryan, or the team's newly hired "accountability coach" at his Friday press conference. [The Dallas Morning News]

University of Connecticut men's basketball coach Jim Calhoun is taking an indefinite leave of absence after being diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a degenerative spine condition that leads to horrific lower-back problems. For what it's worth, we were 10 rows behind the UConn bench during their loss to Georgetown on Wednesday and Calhoun really, really looked like a guy with a bad back. [AP]
